Fall Planting and Seed Saving with George Jacobs
We've passed the Equinox. The arc of the sun is smaller and lower in the sky and the days are getting shorter, and colder. It is tempting to "call it a season" for gardening, but that would be a mistake. There are many gainful projects to accomplish at this time of the year that will be of great benefit to your garden and food supply.
Seed Saving: Most vegetables naturally produce an abundance of seed to carry their line into the following year. Any standard (non-hybrid) variety that does not cross pollinate will breed true– these include carrots, lettuce, peppers, tomatoes, beans, and peas. We will discuss the best ways to save all of these seeds for planting the following year as well as possible strategies for preventing cross pollination of other varieties.
Fall Vegetable Planting: Spinach and garlic are two crops that perform best if planted in October. We will fully explore the best techniques that achieve the most abundant harvests the following year.
Planting Cover Crops: Cover crops are often planted in early Fall to maintain ground cover, smother weeds and feed the soil. We will explore different strategies using grasses, grains, legumes and combinations and their individual benefits.
Frost Protection and Season Extension: We will discuss frost hardiness and ways to extend the season using agricultural fleece, poly tunnels, grow-frames and greenhouses.
Fall Composting and Fertilization: What to clean up or incorporate. What to add as mulch, compost or fertilizer in the Fall.
Fall Cleanup: Leave it in the ground, pull and compost, or keep it out of the compost pile.
Questions: Everyone has unique gardening issues, concerns and possibilities. We'll leave plenty of time to listen and learn from each other.
